New Survey Reveals 21% of Americans Want to Date Weekly

If you’re in a relationship, it’s easy to let date nights slip by. Life can get hectic and overwhelming—especially if you have kids—so finding time to plan a date often takes a backseat.

However, a new YouGov survey highlights that many Americans wish they could go on dates more often than they currently do. The survey sheds light on the types of dates people have enjoyed, along with some fun ideas they’d like to try.

Here’s a closer look at the results and some key takeaways from the survey.

Survey Results: People Want More Date Nights

The survey revealed that many Americans are dating less frequently than they’d like. According to the data, 21% of people wish they could go on a date once a week or more, but only 8% are currently able to do so.

Similarly, 24% of participants would like to go on dates a few times a month, yet only 17% manage to do this.

On the more introverted side, 15% of respondents prefer to date once a month, but only 10% actually do so.

When it comes to married couples, 26% of Americans in relationships wish they could go on a weekly date, but only 13% manage to do this. Additionally, 28% of married couples would like to go on dates a few times a month, but only 23% are able to make it happen.

Date Night with Your Partner is Key

Even if you’ve been together for a while, it’s essential to continue going on dates with your partner. Among people who are in relationships but not married, 24% would like weekly dates, but only 9% actually have them.

Balancing work, school, family responsibilities, and everything else can make date nights feel impossible to schedule. But clearly, many people are eager to make time for dates. So, if you’re in a relationship, this is a sign that your partner would probably appreciate a well-planned date night soon.

The Classic Date: 79% Love Dinner Dates

The survey also asked participants about the types of dates they’ve enjoyed and whether they’d do them again. Dinner dates are a fan favorite: 79% of respondents said they’ve gone to a restaurant for dinner and would love to do it again. Similarly, 75% have gone for lunch at a restaurant and would also enjoy doing so in the future.

Other popular date activities that many would happily repeat include:

  • Watching a movie at home (72%)
  • Eating a meal at home (69%)
  • Going to a movie theater (65%)
  • Visiting a park (64%)
  • Eating breakfast at a restaurant (61%)
  • Going to a fair or carnival (54%)

The survey also revealed some exciting date ideas that many people haven’t tried yet but are eager to experience. About 40% of Americans would love to go stargazing, while 31% are interested in attending a comedy show. Additionally, 29% would like to take an art class for a date, although 46% said they have no interest in trying it.

Other date ideas that didn’t get as much love include going to a haunted house (47% of people are not interested), fishing (46%), and wine tasting (39%).

Choosing the right activity is essential to making your date memorable. While classic activities like dinner or a cozy movie night are always popular, there’s also a strong desire to try unique experiences, such as stargazing or a comedy show.

Speed Dating: Not So Popular

While 4 out of 5 Americans report having had a “wonderful date,” dating can be a mixed bag. Half of Americans have experienced a “terrible date,” with women (57%) being more likely than men (44%) to have had this experience.

Other dating experiences include:

  • Going on a double date (44%)
  • Becoming friends with someone they met on a date (38%)
  • Agreeing to go on a date with someone they weren’t attracted to (38%)
  • Meeting someone online and going on a date (36%)

Interestingly, only 6% of people have tried speed dating.

In general, the survey shows that dating can have its highs and lows. If you’ve recently had some not-so-great dates, don’t be discouraged. Sometimes it’s worth taking a step back and reassessing what you’re looking for.

Takeaways for a Better Date

The survey also asked respondents to share what they think is acceptable and unacceptable behavior on a first date. Here are the big “don’ts” according to Americans:

  • Being rude to service staff (88% find this unacceptable)
  • Criticizing your date’s order (87%)
  • Constantly looking at your phone (87%)
  • Pushing your date to get drunk (84%)
  • Showing up late without notice (84%)

Also, avoid talking about money. A large majority (75%) find it inappropriate to ask about someone’s income, and 56% think it’s wrong to mention your own income on a first date.

Talking about past relationships is more of a gray area—49% of people find it unacceptable, while the other half don’t mind. Similarly, talking about sexual topics is seen as inappropriate by 49% of respondents, with women (61%) more likely to find it off-limits compared to men (37%).

Other topics, like marriage or kids, have mixed responses. While 45% find it unacceptable, 36% think it’s okay.

Ultimately, a successful date requires balance: be kind, show interest, and keep the conversation light and enjoyable. Avoid dominating the conversation or ignoring your date’s questions. And always be on time!

Plan a Unique Date for Something Different

This data is useful for anyone in a relationship or even those who are single. If you’re in a relationship, it’s time to plan a special date! If you’re single, you’ve got new, more exciting ideas beyond the usual “want to grab a drink?” And understanding common dating behavior can help you know what to do—and what to avoid—on your next date.

Methodology

The YouGov poll was conducted online with 2,221 U.S. adults from January 14–17, 2025, and January 15–20, 2025. Participants were randomly selected and weighted for demographics such as age, gender, race, and geography. The margin of error for the overall sample is approximately 3%.
